They both have samplers (traktor's is more convenient but you can get the job done in both), they both do shoutcast broadcasting (VDJ is shoutcast-only and traktor is icecast only afaict :-/), they both record mixes internally, they both have a shitty sounding filter, most of the effects in both of them are much worse than any serious mixer, but with the right taste and keeping them minimal they can be used to nice effect. They both do timecode, they both read BPMs, they both play multiple decks, they both support internal as well as external mixing with a nice interface to configure advanced routing. Don't rely on these silly softwares to mix in key guys.

It's key-detection is nice and overall it's good for software, but there's no software on the market that hits much above 60% in the detection success rate.
VDJ can do key-shifting with a knob which I don't know if traktor can do. Definitely better than VDJ but nothing to speak of.
Traktor's FX units are set up to be wicked awesome, but the effects themselves still sound pretty crappy and un-inspiring overall. So the master-BPM-lock feature is a bit clunky and you really have to be careful with it, so it ends up costing more effort than it's worth. VDJ will simply detect that they are multiples of each other and just line them up. Traktor has "master" BPM-lock where you can set one deck to control the other deck's tempo, but traktor also sucks at BPM detection and it's not smart enough to align 70BPM with 140BPM - it tries to double up tracks that are detected as "half-time". Nice for leaving a few tracks to run while you step out for a break. VDJ has "auto-dj" mode where it'll just crossfade your tracks at the marked points.
VDJ has vdjscript for customizing controller mappings and making advanced button/fader behaviors which is really badass, but with a loooooot of over-verbose work with the mapper in traktor you can accomplish pretty much the same things. The underlying engine is arbitrary unless it gets in your way which neither do for me. uglier? But in terms of displaying information they both do about as well (I personally can read VDJ easier but it's probably just a long time using it).

And, depending on where you live, you may have to end up using Traktor on other people's computers fairly often, so I am going to suggest you at least learn how to match beats and other basic shit in it.Įffects are worse, waveforms are better, BPM detection (in my experience, for lots of complicated dnb and garage/fg) is better, interface is. Traktor is bit more customizable (and way more customizable if you're wanting to use plugins and scripts and scripts and shit written by other people instead of making your own), but at the expense of stability and efficient use of system resources.Ī way more subjective plus for me, however, is the interface, but I may just be saying that because it was like the second or third program I used and ended up learning a lot of the intermediate and advanced stuff on it. But it has better BPM detection than those, from my experience, and it has key detection on its own, whereas you'd have to either buy MixedInKey or deal with an annoying program like Rapid Evolution to have that in the others. It's really weak in the FX department and its sampler is kind of weird, which is where Traktor and Serato win.
I sometimes prefer it, depending on the hardware I'm using.
